PUNARNAVA-A NATURAL REMEDY BY AYURVEDA

This review aims to provide comprehensive affirmations on the phytochemical and pharmacological aspects of Boerhaavia Diffusa, Nyctaginaceae also known as Punarnavaâ€. It possesses a vast ethnomedical history and represents a phytochemical reservoir of heuristic medicinal value. It is one of the oldest oriental medicines mentioned in Ayurveda as potential remedy for various ailments. The whole plant is rich in glycosides, steroids, flavonoids and also contains various polyphenolic compounds. Many pharmacological studies have demonstrated the ability of its antioxidant, ophthalmic,anti-inflammatory, spermatogenic, aphrodisiac, immunostimulant, hepatoprotective, antiasthamatic, supporting its traditional uses. In this review article, we have focused our interest on phytochemistry,enlistment of phytochemicals, responsible for therapeutic values,traditional uses and its reported pharmacological properties.
